Iranian-Palestinian Meetings: Hamas Leader and Islamist Terror Group Chief Discuss Peaceful Resolution to Conflict

Tehran was visited by the leaders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad

On March 26, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyya met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Tehran. During the same visit, Ziyad al-Nahala, the Secretary General of Islamic Jihad, also attended the meeting.

Haniyya was born in January 1963 in Gaza and graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza in Arabic literature before joining Hamas in 1987. He became the head of the Hamas government after Sheikh Ahmad Yassin and Abd al-Aziz Rantisi were assassinated by Israeli forces. In 2017, he was elected as the new head of Hamas politburo and his tenure was extended in August 2021.

On the other hand, Ziyad al-Nahala was born in Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza Strip, and has a history as a militant involved in terrorist activities. After being released from prison in 1985, he joined Islamic Jihad and took part in the first intifada. Al-Nahala became Secretary General of Islamic Jihad in 2018 and is considered one of most wanted terrorists by US authorities. His accounts have been frozen by US authorities and there is a reward for information leading to his capture.
