JMU Loses Key Personnel as they Search for New Head Men’s Basketball Coach

JMU Sports News: Mark Byington Departs for Vanderbilt

With Mark Byington departing from JMU to join Vanderbilt, the Dukes are now in search of a new head men’s basketball coach. As he led the team to the NCAA Tournament in 2023-24 and secured a victory over Wisconsin in the first round, Byington’s departure marks a significant loss for JMU. However, they are set to receive a $500,000 buyout for his departure.

The Dukes have been hit hard by key turnover within their athletic department. In addition to Byington’s departure, President Jonathan Alger announced his own departure for this summer, leaving the university facing significant changes. To make matters worse, Jeff Bourne is about to retire, adding another important position that needs to be filled: an athletic director.

JMU is also searching for a replacement at the head football coach position after Bob Chesney was hired late in 2023 following Curt Cignetti’s departure for Indiana. This makes finding a new head men’s basketball coach all the more critical as the transfer portal is currently open and players are securing spots on teams for the upcoming season. The university needs to act quickly if they want to secure a top talent and avoid missing out on another successful season.
