New Jersey Prepares for the 2026 World Cup: Uncertainty and Anticipation at the Renew Jersey Business Summit

New Jersey Poll: Business Community Optimistic about State’s Potential World Cup Benefits

The anticipation surrounding the 2026 World Cup being hosted in New Jersey is still palpable, despite the event being more than two years away. This excitement was evident at the ReNew Jersey Business Summit & Expo in Atlantic City, where the announcement that the state would host the final match was met with enthusiasm and discussion.

An unscientific poll conducted during the event revealed that nearly two-thirds of respondents viewed this news as the most significant story of 2024, surpassing other options such as the proposed Corporate Transit Fund and the first lady’s effort to earn a U.S. Senate seat.

While hosting such a major sporting event can bring exposure to the state, it does not necessarily guarantee a significant financial gain. Despite this, many survey respondents expressed optimism about the potential economic impact of the event and emphasized its importance for maximizing benefits.

Interestingly, despite their optimism about New Jersey benefiting from the World Cup, many respondents did not believe that their own businesses or organizations would personally profit from it. Nearly half of those surveyed indicated that they did not expect their organizations to benefit on a personal level from hosting the World Cup.

Lauren LaRusso, head of NY/NJ Host Committee for New Jersey, emphasized that her committee’s goal was to ensure that every part of New Jersey benefited from hosting this global event. She explained that it is not just about a few matches but also has a much broader impact that goes beyond Meadowlands area and New York City region. LaRusso highlighted how hosting these mega-sporting events presents an opportunity to showcase South Jersey, Central Jersey and other regions of our great state on a global stage while attracting investment and development in areas previously overlooked.

Overall, while there may be some uncertainty about what lies ahead for New Jersey’s hosting of this major sporting event, one thing is clear: The excitement surrounding it continues to grow with each passing day until we see kickoff in 2026!
